New Dubai Law Ties Visa Renewals to Traffic Fine Payments

29th July 2025

In a recent move that has sparked wide attention across Dubai, authorities have made it clear: residents must now settle all outstanding traffic fines before renewing their residency visas.

For the thousands of expats living and working in the emirate, this update is more than just a minor procedural change, it directly ties road behaviour to residency status. Here’s what you need to know and how you can ensure you’re on the right side of the law.

What’s Changed?

According to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), visa renewal applications will be blocked if applicants have unpaid traffic fines.

This means that before submitting your visa renewal, whether through an employer, PRO, or independently, you must ensure that all penalties recorded by the Dubai Police are cleared.

Why the Change?

The initiative is aimed at improving road safety and ensuring accountability. Dubai Police have noted an increasing trend in unpaid fines, particularly from repeat offenders. By linking visa renewal to fine clearance, the government hopes to encourage more responsible driving across the emirate.

How to Check and Pay Your Fines

You can view and settle your traffic fines through the following platforms:

It’s quick, secure, and increasingly necessary if your visa renewal is coming up.

Will This Affect All Residents?

Yes, this applies to all Dubai residents, regardless of nationality or employment sector. Whether you’re an individual renewing your family visa or an employer renewing staff permits, unpaid traffic fines will now halt the process.

This policy is currently being enforced in Dubai only, but similar measures could be rolled out in other emirates.

For many expats, residency in the UAE is linked to job security, housing, and family stability. Something as seemingly small as an overlooked fine could now lead to significant disruption.

Planning ahead is critical. Don’t leave your visa renewal to the last minute, especially if you suspect there may be unresolved penalties under your name or vehicle.
